Kicking off the 2025 Colorado legislative session

Kicking off the 2025 Colorado legislative session

Today marks the start of Colorado’s 2025 legislative session, and we’re diving in with determination to bring a Western Colorado voice to the Capitol amidst a challenging legislative landscape. Here’s what’s at the top of our radar:

Defending what matters: This year, Colorado is facing a billion-dollar budget deficit, and state lawmakers are tasked with balancing the budget — a constitutional requirement in Colorado. This means our work this session will be largely defensive as we protect critical funding that supports West Slope communities.

Advancing Regenerative Agriculture: Despite the challenging fiscal landscape, we’re thrilled to reintroduce the Regenerative Agriculture Restaurant Incentive Bill (formerly Senate Bill 24-152), which would support Western Slope farmers who utilize healthy soil practices to grow food. With no fiscal note, this bill lays the groundwork to give tax credits to restaurants purchasing from local farmers using regenerative practices. Its bipartisan support and stakeholder enthusiasm give us hope for early progress.

Looking Ahead: With the large deficit dominating the session, we don’t expect this to be a session with lofty climate and energy bills, however, we will be on the lookout for opportunities to support clean energy, clean water, and clean air. West Slope Youth Voice students are also gearing up for their annual Lobby Trip, happening February 9-11. They’ll focus on protecting funding for student services while learning the ropes of advocacy at the Capitol. Stay tuned for updates on their inspiring efforts!

That’s our hot take as we start the 2025 legislative session. Stay tuned for more updates as the months unfold. This year our teams will be working hard to protect what matters for Western Colorado, and advance important new legislation.
