Grassroots Democracy

We believe our democracy only works when ordinary folks have a voice in decisions that affect our lives. Community organizing is rooted in working with people to develop the skill and will for people to take action to improve our communities and the quality of life for all.

Civic Engagement

Western Colorado Alliance for Community Action believes in and practices community organizing, which is all about empowered civic engagement — each one of us having the right and opportunity to impact public decisions that affect our lives. It may begin and end at the ballot box, but we have all the time in the middle to make sure local voices are heard.

West Slope Youth Voice

West Slope Youth Voice (WSYV) is a student-led, student-run organization supported by Western Colorado Alliance staff that aims to foster and support the next generation of leaders by engaging young people in our democracy and advocating for student issues with elected leaders to amplify youth voices.

Climate & Energy

We believe that our region can be part of the climate solution, creating a just and sustainable energy future. Western Colorado has a long history of energy and mineral extraction, leaving a legacy of pollution and impacts. Now we have the opportunity to address this history of impacts and lead the way for a just and equitable energy transition.

Clean Energy

At a time when new breakthrough technologies, plummeting renewables costs, increased renewables access and investment, and growing demands for cleaner, homegrown energy are transforming our landscape, Western Colorado Alliance is proud to be at the forefront of clean and renewable energy efforts across our region.

Oil & Gas

We work to protect landowner rights and human and environmental health in the face of oil and gas development — ensuring that people have a fair say in where and how extraction occurs, and that development is balanced with long-term community interests.

Just Energy Transition

Western Colorado Alliance members and people across the country are working to shape a just and equitable transition to a diverse, and self-reliant economy, moving away from the cycles of extraction driven booms and busts that have plagued our Western communities for centuries.

Homegrown Prosperity

We believe our rural communities can thrive through homegrown prosperity, where the Western Slope is home to diverse and resilient local economies that work for all of us and don't leave people behind.

Local Foods & Agriculture

Healthy communities depend on sustainable and thriving family farms, ranches, and food production. Western Colorado’s economy, land, and people are able to thrive through strong local food and agriculture systems.

Affordable Housing

Our Alliance believes that shelter is a human right and should be affordable, sustainable, equitable and safe. No matter where we come from, what we look like or how much we earn, we all need a warm, safe, and stable home where we can raise our families, make connections with our neighbors and get involved in our communities.

Public Transportation

Our Alliance believes in the freedom of movement and the right to transit options that are fair, frequent, and affordable. Public transit is at the intersection of climate justice, health equity, and economic prosperity. When people can get to where they need to go, they can easily access jobs, education, medical care, culture, goods and services, and the daily life of their communities. We know that rural public transportation can be a viable public service in our community that supports everyone who needs to get around in Western Colorado.

Leadership Development

We believe in shared leadership and in everyone's potential to be a leader with the right encouragement and support. When people act on their vision and values and come together to achieve change in their communities, they are exercising true leadership.

Leadership Development

An important part of community organizing is leadership development — giving each person respect, support, and the opportunity to speak and act for themselves. Leadership development is integral to our vision of creating truly just and democratic communities across Western Colorado.
