The Western Colorado Alliance of Mesa County works to make Mesa County a healthy place to live, work, and thrive by building grassroots power and just communities.
Current Work
A major focus of Western Colorado Alliance of Mesa County currently is affordable housing, which is worked on by our Just Housing committee. Just Housing believes that shelter is a human right and should be affordable, sustainable, equitable, and safe.
Accomplishments
In 2024, our Alliance hosted a work dinner with the Just Housing team at Las Colonias Park.
We mounted a successful Seeds of Community Action event with an emphasis on housing in Fruita in April 2024.
In August 2024, we hosted a Housing “Know Your Rights” event in Clifton.
We also held fundraiser campaigns for the Just Housing team in collaboration with Octopus Coffee and Trail Life Brewing in Grand Junction.
In 2023, Just Housing finished the year by getting out the vote for Ballot Measure 2B and Proposition HH. Proposition HH was a statewide proposition and was ultimately too complicated and did not pass. Measure 2B, however, passed by 114 votes, and permitted 99-year leases to build affordable housing, replacing the previous 25-year-lease limit.
In 2022, Western Colorado Alliance of Mesa County knocked on 480 doors (with a team including one staff organizer, 14 volunteers, and one paid bilingual canvasser). We conducted 142 in-depth conversations at the door with 57 people interested in neighborhood meetings.
