The trojan horse on the ballot

The trojan horse on the ballot

Ballots have officially dropped in Colorado, and many of you should already have yours in hand! As we approach Election Day, we want to ensure that you feel informed and empowered to vote all the way down the ballot. That’s why we’ve created the Vote Up Virtual Ballot Guide to help you make confident decisions on every measure. Be sure to check it out on our website and share it with your friends and family!

One of the most important measures we want to highlight is Proposition 131. You might be surprised to hear that we’re recommending a NO vote on this one. While it might look good for our election process, to us and many of our allies, this proposition is a Trojan horse. Creating a jungle primary paired with ranked choice voting on the ballot will complicate voting and likely reduce participation from communities that already face barriers to the polls. From “uncurable” ballots to big money-backed candidates dominating the airwaves, there are several reasons we’re concerned this measure will impact Colorado’s strong election system for the worse. You can download a more comprehensive detail of our reasons for opposing here or check out our take on all the measures  on our Vote Up Virtual Ballot Guide. But rest assured, we’re standing up for a more accessible and inclusive voting process by opposing this measure!

If you’re looking to get more involved this election season, we’ve got a fantastic opportunity! Western Colorado Alliance is partnering with Colorado Common Cause to recruit and train Election Protection volunteers. This is a chance to play a critical role in ensuring our elections remain accessible and every voter’s voice is heard.

Volunteers will:

  • Monitor polling centers for accessibility and compliance on Election Day
  • Test in-person voting protocols by voting in-person and sharing feedback
  • Share election protection materials in your community
  • Help call voters whose ballots were rejected, ensuring every vote counts
