As Western Colorado Alliance of Mesa County closes out the year, we have good work to celebrate as well as much to look forward to in 2025. This was a tough year for me personally. Many of you heard of the struggles I had with my family and I would like to say a huge thank you for your understanding. My dad got sick and I had to take the whole summer off, but he is finally back home and recovering. We had a lot of plans for Mesa County and my absence slowed some of them down. Regardless of that, we still did so much this year! Read on to hear the big highlights and how the year turned out.
In this edition:
This year the Alliances Mesa County members met for a meet-and-greet put on by our Coordinating Committee members Peter LeVon, Jay Mashburn, Haley Van Camp, Thomas Acker, and Tanya Travis. We enjoyed drinks and food from El Tapatio while saying hi to friends and getting to know other Mesa County members. We had a fun night of trivia and presentations from some of our organizers on work happening in other areas of the Alliance. We had a fun time and gathered great input from the group. We informed the group that the upcoming campaign was going to focus on Community Safety, but throughout our narrowing of the issue, we found it too broad. We did our research of the issues with only a few members invested in the issue. We decided to put a pause on this topic and reconvene in December to get updates from Mesa County and see what the year will bring in 2025. We will have our monthly Coordinating Committee meeting here in the Western Colorado Alliance office on December 16, at 5:30 pm.
Just Housing had a year planned out of Know Your Rights events. And although not all were completed, we had some pretty successful events. A great Seeds of Community Action where Western Colorado Alliance of Mesa County, Just Housing, and Local Food and Agriculture got to highlight some of the great work we have done and highlight the events coming up. We also held a Know Your Rights event in Clifton that the Just Housing team had to put on without me due to my being on leave, but the team pulled together some great work and had an amazing turnout! And they went on to help Western Colorado Alliance in other events put on by the organizers.
We have finally held some of our first fundraisers for Mesa County and they have been so much fun! We got to do a Grain For Good event with Trail Life Brewery that earned us $130!
Then we held a dinner for our mother organization, the Western Organization of Resource Councils (WORC) at Las Colonias Park. We earned $300 for hosting, planning, and getting everything together for our partner organizations to come eat and enjoy a dip in the Colorado River!
All the fun ended with an ongoing collaboration with Octopus Coffee and their introduction of their Midnight Walk blend, which earned us $195.55 in donations since June!
Although, some things might not have gone our way, we can see all the great things that we managed to accomplish this year. Going from one or two events and no fundraisers to six events and three fundraisers! We have definitely revitalized this committee, and I could not be prouder of the teams that have helped out!
As a reminder we are doing a new end-of-the-year fundraiser for each organizer to raise funds. Here is the link for you to donate: https://mtyc.co/4faqof. Thank you for the support this year. I have truly enjoyed my time with you all and look forward to working with you next year!
