Lobbying at the State Legislature
Local and Statewide Initiatives
A pinnacle of grassroots democracy happens when voters put forward a statewide ballot initiative on a critical issue. Over recent years, our Alliance has participated in a number of statewide and local coalitions, working to pass ballot initiatives — everything from circulating petitions to ‘get out the vote’ canvassing. Recent examples of our campaigns include the 2022 Spring City Election bid for a Community Center in Grand Junction and the 2016 Minimum Wage initiative which succeeded in raising the state’s minimum wage.
Participating in Opportunities for Public Comment
Sometimes government agencies have formal processes for gathering public opinion about a specific project or regulation. We take full advantage of those opportunities when they relate to our issues by alerting our members, encouraging comment-writing participation, or, in the case of public hearings, organizing attendance and testimony.
Holding Elected Officials Accountable
Our Alliance is a non-partisan 501c3 organization, however, we know how important it is to have relationships with our elected officials. We work with community members to build relationships with those who represent us and make sure the needs and interests of our constituents are communicated to our elected officials. And when we need to, we hold them accountable to their decisions.
